The relationship between Nick and Littless is a recurring idea in "The Last Good Country," even more important than Nick's legal trouble. From the beginning of the story, their unique relationship is made clear. Nick says that, while he cannot stand the rest of his family, he loves Littless very much. Littless insists on coming with Nick, and Nick hesitates to allow her, fearing for her safety and comfort. Nick frequently goes out of his way to make sure that Littless is comfortable and not worked too hard.
