What is revealed about the character of Gabe in Act 1, Scenes 4 and 5?

The most important point to note about this section is not only the revelation that Gabe is dead, but that he died several years ago. While the implications of this are not immediately clear (and probably wouldn't be to an audience seeing this show, which moves extremely quickly, in performance), upon reflection they suggest some significant things.
