In the aftermath of Diana's explosion, the narrative makes the first real statement of one of its secondary themes, the value of hope as metaphorically represented by light. The reference to light here, meanwhile, foreshadows the return of both the word and the metaphor at the end of the piece, in which all the characters sing about finding their own life and hope.
