Why does Case try to save Corto/Armitage?

Case needs to save Corto because Armitage is the only person who knows how to deactivate the toxin sacs in Case's bloodstream. Case knows that he needs a certain enzyme to break the bonds on the sacs, and tries in vain to get the name of the enzyme from Corto before he dies.
