How does Case find strength within himself?

Neuromancer tells Case that he must hate someone in order to succeed. Case decides to hate himself, his self-loathing culminating in a desire to die that frees his conscience enough to pilot the Kuang with perfection. In freeing himself of everything he has to lose, Case heightens his abilities to a level he has not previously experienced.
