What does Jack hear and how does it make him feel at the beginning of Chapter 9?

Jack hears a woman's voice singing. It is a tender sound that makes Jack hurt. He hasn't heard a woman's voice much since his mother died. So the sound made him stand and listen as he tried to soothe the ache inside.
