In "Land of Lost Souls," what does Pi see?

When Pi arrives at a rocky shore, he sees a flutter of movement. Then he realizes there are people there; people who are transparent. Other than being transparent, Pi notices that the people are doing normal daily tasks like chopping wood, washing clothes, or honing tools.
