How did Gunnar compromise MacScott's dogs' sense of smell?

While Gunnar talks with MacScott, he uses some shaving cream to shave his face. Then he gives the dogs some beef jerky. While he gives the dogs beef jerky, he rubs their noses with the mentholated shaving cream. So the dogs won't be able to smell much of anything for a while except menthol.
