Naturalists are similar to realists in their attention to detail. Naturalist works contain detailed passages describing settings, backgrounds, appearances, and emotions. This helps the reader get a specific and fully formed perception of the characters' lives. Details also give the work a realistic feeling. Naturalists include details of every kind, not just those that are considered artistic or beautiful.
