In Chapter 19, we learn that Goldmund has been working on the carving project for two years. His project is complex and includes a sculpted garden, as well as scenes from the lives of saints. For imagery, Goldmund draws on his experiences, including the women he has met, and the horrors he witnessed during the plague.
