O'Connor received a letter from Sister Evangelist, the Sister Superior of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Free Cancer Home in Atlanta asking for her help in writing a novel about an inspirational child named Mary Ann. The nun wanted O'Connor to visit the home for a few days and then write the story.
