Why was Sarah walking alone on the County Road the night she disappeared in the novel, My Sister’s Grave?

Even though Tracy told Sarah not to take the County Road home, Sarah disobeyed her. When the truck ran out of gas, Sarah began walking home but was picked up by Edmund.
