Who is Matt Spell and why does he come to the mountain?

Matt works after school for the Poughkeepsie "New Yorker," a newspaper. He comes to the mountain because he hopes to find the wild boy and get a story about him. If Matt could get a story about the wild boy, it would help him meet his goal of being a reporter.
