What did Sam find that seemed to be the foundation of the old house and what did he find there?

Sam found ruins. There were a few stones in a square, a slight depression for the basement, and trees growing right up through what had once been the living room. He hoped to uncover some old iron implements, but he couldn't find anything without digging.
