How did Sam make salt in "I Learn to Season My Food"?

Sam put some hickory sticks in a tin can and set it to boiling while he fixed dinner. He left the can to boil dry when he went to bed. In the morning the can was dry and thick with a black substance that was very salty. That was how he made salt.
