Why can't Master Osman give his full attention to the task of looking for the illustrations?

Master Osman cannot give the process of looking for the illustrations his full attention because of gossip from years past, because he is looking for a sign that Bihzad had worked on it instead of going blind (or while he was blind), and because he is looking at the horses' nostrils.
