Strane's office, which is located just behind the classroom is described as cluttered and small, “barely bigger than a closet” (117). It is crowded with boxes of old student papers, a kind of s ghost town feeling that suggests the office is more haunted than Vanessa appreciates. Vanessa responds to the tiny protected space, particularly its only piece of furniture, the threadbare tweed couch where the two often make love. She calls it their “perfect hideaway” (118).
