At 15, Vanessa finds the poetry (particularly Dickinson and Millay) intoxicating and enveloping. She wants to believe Strane’s passion for her is something more than the lecherous and cool calculations of a middle-aged perpetually horny pedophile. Strane uses language to make the young and vulnerable Vanessa believe that their love is special, ethereal, and deeply spiritual. They are destined to be together. As part of his seduction, he tells Vanessa that in her poetry he senses she is a “dark romantic” (45).
