What is the reason behind VJ's decreased mental abilities at the age of three in the book, Mutation?

At the age of three, VJ apparently suffers a sudden and large decrease in his mental abilities, becoming reduced to a simply gifted child. In actuality, this event is staged by VJ so he will be perceived as less of an anomaly.
