The author utilizes the design house to symbolize the ways in which appearances can be deceptive. While Mrs. Harris initially presumes that she would feel out of place in the House of Christian Dior, she finds camaraderie and friendship with the people within. Mrs. Harris meets Natasha, Madame Colbert, Mr. Fauvel, and the Marquis de Chassagne during her visits to the design house and the friendships she forms with them dissolve the initial fear and trepidation she felt in the building.
