Boston is the place symbolic of Katherine's childhood. It is the place from which she departs and leaves behind the fantasies and wonders of youth in search of her true identity as a woman.

Another example of symbolism can be found in the map Katherine looks at with her mother before her trip. with her mother. The map symbolizes Katherine's desire to experience new sections of the world. She fantasizes about places far and wide.
