Mr. Sampath would be considered the novel's antagonist, though he is not a traditional antagonist. Sampath is presented as a foil to the novel’s protagonist, Srinivas. While Srinivas is content to observe those around him, Sampath is wildly proactive. While Srinivas is doubting and critical of the world around him, Sampath is confident and brash. While Srinivas constantly concerns himself with the search for truth, Sampath gleefully stretches the truth to serve his own interests.
