Mrs. Brown is more of a symbol in the essay than she is a real person. Woolf introduces Mrs. Brown with an anecdote about seeing an elderly woman on the train being intimated by a man over a financial matter. Woolf decides to refer to the woman as Mrs. Brown, and starts to develop stories about her life. For Woolf, the figure of Mrs. Brown represents the challenge that Georgian writers face: writing intriguing and memorable characters without using the conventions of the Edwardians.
