Arnold Bennett was a prolific English novelist at the time Woolf was writing this essay and is the eponymous subject of "Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown." He is best known for his works Anna of the Five Towns (1902), and The Old Wives' Tale (1908). Before Woolf penned "Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown," Bennett had written a review of her novel Jacob's Ladder in which he accused her of failing to create realistic characters. This criticism, which Bennett also applied to all young novelists at the time, was the inspiration behind Woolf's essay.
