Why does Silvia put the birdcage into her ex-husband's car in the short-story, Mouthful of Birds?

When the narrator sees Silvia loading the birdcage into his car, he runs outside and demands to know what she is doing. Silvia explains that he is taking Sara, their daughter, home because, as she explains, “one more day with her and I’ll kill myself” (33).
