What metaphors are used in Mourning Becomes Electra by Eugene O'Neill?

In Play III, Act II, the darkness in which Orin sits serves as a metaphor for the spiritual darkness into which he has sunk. It also foreshadows the darkness into which Lavinia sinks at the end of the play.
