The themes of censorship and alienation are prominent in the play's second act. The new regime wants total control over the people including what they say and in what dialect. The fact that the old woman cannot understand the language of the capital further alienates her from her son, the prisoner, because now she is helpless, unable to communicate with him in this situation.
