Laura's suicide serves as a symbol of her ongoing manipulation of Ralph, even from beyond the grave. According to Abby, she has often threatened to kill herself as a manipulation tactic to get Ralph to do her bidding or give her attention. The fact that she eventually goes through with it causes Ralph to question whether or not it is his fault that she died.
