The knife that the narrator places near her mirror is symbolic of her internal struggle. She uses the knife to visualize the demon she perceives to be inside of her. The knife therefore makes tangible what is invisible. The knife is a representation of all that the narrator feels incapable of answering, confronting, or owning at the start of the novel.
