Who is Michael Mayeux from Mortal Fear and what is their importance?

Mayeux is the New Orleans detective who is investigating the Karin Wheat murder and who is the first officer contacted by Harper Cole regarding his suspicions. Mayeux later takes time off work to provide surveillance to the Cole home in case the killer returns. He is shot with a dart and stabbed with a screwdriver, but not killed.
