Rose is Mma Ramotswe's maid. She is described as a competent and efficient single mother, whose presence in Mma Ramotswe's household is another manifestation of the latter's compassion.
Motholeli and Puso are the two children who were adopted by Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni in a previous novel. They make their home with Mma Ramotswe. Motholeli is confined to a wheelchair, but nevertheless manages to act as something of a housekeeper in Mma Ramotswe's house on Zebra Drive. Puso is a minor character, who is depicted as a troubled child.
