The nature of beauty is a recurring idea. As mentioned above, the narrative frequently entwines its considerations of the nature of morality with considerations of its relationship to beauty, frequently suggesting that physical beauty and morality are mutually exclusive. In several circumstances, however, the narrative takes the question a degree or two further, making the suggestion that physical beauty is not the only sort of beauty to be considered. There is, for example, the comment quoted on p. 114, in which Mma Ramotswe wonders how someone like Mma Makutsi, who is not conventionally beautiful, could still command the attention of the apprentices, who seem almost entirely obsessed with physically beautiful women.
