What was the purpose of introducing Lazaro into the story

Laszlo lives with Claudia for a time and remains her intimate friend throughout her life. He is homosexual and a tortured artist for whom the refugee experience is translated into monstrous images. Despite his histrionic tendencies, Claudia admires and respects him.
