What is the importance of Charmouth Beach in the novel, Moon Tiger?

Claudia's first memory described in the novel is of Charmouth Beach, a place where she and Gordon would go on summer trips to look for fossils among the cliffs. Claudia falls from a cliff after she and Gordon have an argument over territory on the cliffs.
