Why does Stela choose Ghana as the location where she will complete her Study Abroad program in the novel, Monster in the Middle?

Shortly after Johann proposes, Stela feels afraid that she does not really know who she is. She believes that the only way for her to discover herself is to take a trip to Africa. When she first arrives in Legon, she is hopeful that the experience will free her from her past and clarify her path for the future.
