How does the author use imagery in the novel, Monogamy?

The author uses vivid detail in describing the settings and atmospheres through which her characters move in both the narrative past and present. In Chapter 20, for example, when Annie recalls her days at Sofie Kahn's house, the narrator says: "Through the row of windows to the east, you could see the lake—immense, churning, a white-capped greenish gray below the leaden sky" (173). This rich depiction of the view from Sofie's home, both allows the reader to inhabit the space with Annie, and illustrates Annie's childhood connection to the space.
