To put it as easily as possible, marriage is directly related to money, as if it is a financial contract. Sex may also be used for money without marriage. Thus, marriage and sex are both equated with money, but in two totally different ways. One of the questions in the novel seems to be are prostitution (being paid for sex) and marrying for financial gain the same thing? Is there really any difference?
