Pak's wheelchair symbolizes his diminishing stature and dignity in America. Pak feels belittled and inferior in America. He longs for the respect he held in Korea, and feels he has lost his footing as patriarch of the family. The wheelchair also symbolizes Young's growing sense of power. Although she initially hesitates to speak out or confront her husband, she begins to find her voice and presence as the work progresses. She no longer feels the need to make herself small in Pak's presence and thus begins to stand tall for all she believes in.
