What does Barney Song represent?

The Barney Song is symbolic of family, as the refrain chants "I love you, you love me, we're a happy fami-" (7). Yet the chorus remains unfinished when the lines are first disclosed. This bespeaks the expectation of what should happen in families, and simplifies family dynamics. Yet loving family members does not always result in happiness, and happiness is often thwarted by circumstances. Each of the families in the works has some obstacle to happiness, whether it be disability, deception, or displacement.
