The novel’s prose is often defined by a tone of detachment—sometimes even dry humor—although emotion and pathos are frequently integral to the novel as well. Ultimately, however, the novel seems to develop a tone of hope rather than one of dour nihilism, as the narrative recognizes the persistent possibility of happiness despite adversity.
