At the same moment Franny decides to crash the car on the way home from the party, an owl sweeps over the road. The owl's presence is miraculous because the birds are supposedly extinct. Therefore, the creature symbolizes resurrection, appearing moments before Niall's death. Though Franny feels she has died on the roadside with her husband, the owl subtextually foreshadows Franny's own spiritual resurrection in the years to come.
