How was the reactor in Chernobyl different from those used in other countries as noted in the nonfiction book, Midnight in Chernobyl?

The RMBK-1000 style nuclear reactor, which was only used in the Soviet Union, used graphite as a moderator and water as a coolant, which was cheaper than using just graphite or just water, but also more dangerous.
