Why doesn't Fiji hide her feelings from Bobo in the novel, Midnight Crossroad?

Fiji doesn't express her feelings for Bobo because she feels he will not feel the same way and, as they are friends and members of a community that is like a family, his rejection could make their friendship, and living in the same community, awkward.
