Uncle Kamil is described as a hulking, balding, florid-faced maker and seller of sweets. He owns a shop to the right of Midaq Alley's entry, and he habitually sleeps on the shop's threshold, armed with a flyswatter on his lap. Kamil complains about being in such deep poverty and shares a flat with his barber friend, Abbas Hilu. Kamil's confectionary artistry is well known outside the alley, but he has never prospered financially.
