One example of foreshadowing can be found in Chapter One, when Merlin dreams about the bear. He dreams about a bear in the forest... a bear with a gold coronet on its head and that walks upright, like a man.

Merlin views the dream as a portent of danger; bears are dangerous animals. He is still learning to interpret his dreams on the slant and thus does not realize that it means he is to meet Cub, boy of the wodewose. For the novella's audience, it foreshadows even moreā€”the advent of King Arthur.
