Who is Sister Josephine?

Sister Josephine is one of the three nuns that founded Mercy House. She nursed Evelyn out of her alcoholism, then helped co-found Mercy House. One resident referred to her as “Sister Gollum” (49) because of her short, shapeless appearance. Her vice of choice is cigarettes. Despite her appearance, Josephine is tough and protective over Mercy House. She has a membership at the shooting range (179) which means she’s able to empty Angel’s gun once he drops it. She and Maria are Evelyn’s closest confidants and feel more like family to Evelyn than her biological family.
