Phones and laptops in the novel represent connectedness. Mother Superior is constantly on the phone. She is able to multitask so effectively because she has a cell phone, meaning she can be reached anywhere. Evelyn learns the Lysol-flamethrower trick from Facebook, which she must have seen on either a phone or a laptop. After being excommunicated, Evelyn is afraid of when or if her service will be cut off, since the church pays her phone bill. The church also paid for her laptop, but she refuses to surrender that piece of her connection. When Evelyn believes Maureen has abandoned her, she makes several calls to her. They go unanswered because Maureen forgot her phone at home, symbolizing that she’s not even allowing Evelyn the chance to connect with her.
