The nun’s habits are a symbol of concealment and commitment. Evelyn takes solace in the long habits that reach the ground. Evelyn is wearing a version of a habit when she is assaulted and raped by Hawkins. Despite being as concealed as a person could be, Hawkins still preyed on her. In the attic the sisters keep a box labeled “Bad Habits” (93) in the attic. The pun is funny but also reveals the sad, at times suffocating nature of the full length habit. They are also a symbol of commitment to the church. By no longer requiring nuns to wear habits, the nuns are no longer as tied to the church, and therefore freer to other issues. That then leads to a confusion, or a diverging in concerns.
