The lit windows of Chauncey Street are representative of safety and guidance. Evelyn distributes lights for the neighbors to put in their windows during Christmas time, to guide women on their way to Mercy House. Desiree experiences the welcoming effect of those lights firsthand. Evelyn experiences a similar effect when she comes from the hospital and sees the home lights of Chauncey Street, guiding her in a similar way. The lights are a welcoming presence, as well as providing a feeling of ease by giving a little extra light to whoever is walking down the sidewalk.
