The physical building of the church in Brooklyn represents power and structure. It is a huge building that takes up an entire city block. Often when she passes the church, Evelyn sees a homeless woman named Miss Linda sitting in the bus stop outside the church. Miss Linda stays outside most of the time, despite the winter weather. This represents how the church as an institution pushes out people who need its help most. Even though Evelyn tells her to go inside, Miss Linda is very reluctant to enter, knowing that it does not symbolically hold space for her. Despite her excommunication, which should keep her from entering a church, Evelyn returns to the site of power and structure to challenge the powerful figure within.
